The Tremola is Switzerland's most famous cobbled road — 24 hairpins on original granite setts climbing from Airolo to the Gotthard summit at 2,106m. It's not fast and it's not smooth. That's the point. Every car enthusiast should drive it once. The cobbles demand respect below 40 km/h — your suspension will thank you. The modern road runs alongside and is quicker, but the old Tremola is the one worth doing. Drive north-to-south for the best sequence. The hospice at the summit has been there since the 13th century.
