The Splügen at 2,113m crosses from Graubünden into Italy through some of the tightest hairpins on any Swiss pass. The south side — the Italian Strada dello Spluga — is the star: narrow, dramatic, and cut into cliff faces with unguarded drops. Not for the faint-hearted or the wide-bodied. The Swiss north side from Splügen village is wider and well-maintained. Surface quality is mixed: good on the Swiss side, rougher once you cross into Italy. Drive north-to-south for the dramatic Italian descent. Rarely congested. One of the best-kept secrets in the Alps.
