The Timmelsjoch at 2,474m crosses the Austrian-Italian border between the Ötztal and Passeier valleys. The Austrian side is a modern toll road — smooth, wide, tunnelled in places. The Italian side is the opposite: narrow, unguarded, and raw. That contrast is half the appeal. Surface quality drops sharply after the border. Lowered cars should avoid the Italian side entirely. The motorcycle museum at the top is worth a look even if you're in a car. Open June to October. Toll is around €16 for a car. Best combined with a run through the Ötztal from Innsbruck.
